Patrick Stewart was offered to ConJose at the very last minute. ConJose did not pay anything for Patrick Stewart to attend.
SFX is paying a guest fee to Leonard Nimoy to attend their convention.
Torcon 3 would love to have Leonard Nimoy as a guest at our convention as well. However, our convention is not as attractive for media guests for two main reasons:
1) We do not pay guests to attend our convention
2) We do not allow guests at our convention to charge for autographs.
We do hope to have a number of media guests at our convention. However, if they attend, it will be to participate in panel items. Do not expect large name media guests unless a studio pays their way.
So why is Torcon 3 "presenting" Leonard Nimoy at SFX?
Torcon 3 has to do a lot of local publicity in the Toronto area in the coming months to let people know about our convention. Yes, people who go to sf conventions or who frequent sf-related book stores, etc. know that Torcon 3 is coming. But a lot of the general public who might not attend a local SF convention, but who MIGHT attend the 61st WORLD science fiction convention, do not or know anything about us.
Our "presentation" of Leonard Nimoy at SFX is a manner in which we are beginning to spread the word about us to the locals - it is the first step in our local promotion.
Watch for more local promotion as we approach the convention, including a telephone information line.
